California State University, Northridge (CSUN) has announced plans to commence construction of $49.9m Sierra Annex, a new academic building, in Los Angeles, California, the US, in spring 2022.

The new 40,145ft2 building will be constructed on land immediately south of Sierra Hall, which is adjacent to Manzanita Hall and across West University Drive from parking structure B-3.

It will include new 3,050ft2 lecture hall, two smaller lecture halls and four seminar rooms with flexible seating, energy-efficient design and latest audiovisual (AV) equipment.

CSU state funds will provide funding for the project, which is planned to be completed and opened for the start of the fall 2023 semester.

Other team member of the new academic building includes construction firm Gilbane and architectural firm Gensler.

CSUN Facilities, Development, and Operations associate vice president Ken Rosenthal said: “We’re truly building a modern academic building in all ways, from the pedagogy — how teaching and learning will happen in it — to the materials that will be used in the building. It’s a really creative design for the site.

“The building is set up for the most flexible learning environments. All of the rooms will be larger in size than our normal classrooms, to allow the classes to reconfigure the furniture for breakout sessions, which you can’t do in Sierra Hall.”

Upon completion of Sierra Annex construction, classes at Sierra Hall will be shifted to the new building and it clears the way for the renovation of Sierra Hall, which is expected to commence in 2025.
