The construction of Western Sydney International Airport’s (WSI) Airside Civil and Pavement works package has been completed by CPB Contractors, a part of CIMIC Group, in a joint venture (JV) with Spanish company Acciona.

This signifies the official certification of the airport’s runway and key airside facilities.

One of five work packages that CPB Contractors has been tasked to deliver at WSI, the project utilised modern technology and rapid exit taxiways and required 2.7 million work hours from thousands of workers.

Under the Airside Civil and Pavement works package, the JV team has transformed the site, constructing a 3.7km runway, installing around 3,000 aeronautical ground lights and 248 high-intensity approach lights, in preparation for the airport to handle up to ten million annual passengers from its operations in 2026.

Beyond the runway and lighting, the Airside Civil and Pavement Works Package also included the design and construction of taxiway pavements, aircraft pavement markings, airside roads, surface water drainage, an airside security fence, and landscaping.

CPB Contractors project director Christian Byrne said: “Successful delivery of the ACP project required millions of tonnes of high-quality, high-strength, quarry materials to be sourced and imported into the site, then processed and placed in the aircraft pavement areas, to construct the aviation pavements to strict FAA specifications, which took an enormous effort from a large team.
