National Highways has appointed Costain as a Delivery Integration Partner (DIP), along with Keltbray, Kier and Balfour Beatty Atkins, for the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project in the UK

Under a strategic partnership with Jacobs, Costain will work with its partners to improve major junctions between the M6 Junction 40 at Penrith and the A1 at Scotch Corner as well as undertake the dualling work of single carriageway sections of the highway.

It will support the design and construction works besides providing buildability advice.

The detailed design phase of the project is expected to begin soon and complete in early 2024.

Construction work is anticipated to commence in spring 2024, following approval of the proposals of National Highways.

The project is anticipated to help transform journeys from East to West.

Costain has been chosen to lead Enterprise Project Management Office (PMO) for the project, alongside its Enterprise Partners, including National Highways, four DIPs, and Amey Consulting and Arup.

Since September 2021, Costain has been collaborating with Enterprise Partners to develop the construction programme and enhance the project design for the works.

Costain Highways director Simon Ellison said: “The A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project will transform journeys, improve road safety and connections between communities that will deliver significant economic and social value.
