Construction has commenced of more than 100 affordable homes for seniors with low to moderate incomes and people with disabilities in Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

The construction is expected to finish by summer 2023.

Langley East MLA Megan Dykeman said: “Our government is proud to work with partners like the Langley Lions Housing Society (LLHS) to build new, modern homes so that people who call Langley home do not have to go elsewhere to find affordable housing.

“This new redevelopment will ensure that seniors and people with disabilities in Langley can continue to live healthily and comfortably, surrounded by the services and people they count on.”

Situated at 20355 54 Ave., the eight-storey apartment building will feature 101 one-bedroom units that include 30 assisted-living units.

The building will feature an indoor lounge area, a larger shared-activity area at the adjacent Evergreen Timbers building.

The outdoor space will include gardens and walkways for residents.

This redevelopment project will replace a three-storey, 66-unit apartment building Birch that was earlier located on the site but got destroyed by a fire in 2017.

Former residents will be provided an opportunity to move into the new building.

Non-profit housing provider LLHS provided the land for the project and will own and operate the new building.

With support from Fraser Health, the society will offer support and care for people with disabilities living in the 30 assisted-living units. The assisted-living residents will be chosen by Fraser Health.

The Canadian province, through BC Housing, offered a grant of approximately $11m from the Community Housing Fund for the construction of the building.

Additionally, BC Housing will offer the society with an annual operating subsidy of around $444,000.

This scheme is a part of the LLHS’s greater redevelopment project, which will see construction of 981 units of affordable rental seniors housing on a 2.2ha site.
