Balfour Beatty commences construction on the Junior Achievement (JA) of Georgia’s new JA Colonial Group Discovery Center at Georgia Southern University’s (GSU) Armstrong Atlantic campus in Savannah, Georgia.

The new facility will cater to 15,000 middle school students annually.

The partnership between JA of Georgia, GSU, the Colonial Group and Balfour Beatty will see the existing GSU Student Recreation Center being retrofit into a space that will offer students with continued exposure to JA’s financial literacy programmes for youth.

Colonial Group, as lead sponsor of the new facility, will fund $2m for renovation and launch of the Discovery Center, which is a part of the facility’s $3.8m capital campaign.

JA of Georgia vice president of marketing Camille Russo said: “We are so excited to be deepening our impact in the Savannah area and are looking forward to growing our relationship with our partners Georgia Southern University, the Colonial Group and Balfour Beatty.

“We are grateful to the local Savannah community for decades of support and are thrilled to bring this innovative and engaging experience to the students of the region.”

Balfour Beatty is acting as general contractor for the project.

This project will transform GSU’s current 25,000ft2 building into a Discovery Center resembling Savannah’s Forsyth Park, and will have 18 replicated storefronts around a makeshift green space.

The JA Colonial Group Discovery Center is the second renovation project for Balfour Beatty, which recently finished the delivery of the newly remodeled Discovery Center in Atlanta.

Balfour Beatty in Savannah senior project manager Ronnie Hall said: “Our company is grateful for our long-standing relationship with JA of Georgia and honored to be working with community partners to deliver another innovative learning facility that will provide endless opportunities for our youth.

“The new JA Colonial Group Discovery Center at GSU’s Armstrong Atlantic University campus is an important project for our local team members as we continue to grow our Savannah market and bring our notable education expertise to the community. We are excited to start construction on JA of Georgia’s new facility and look forward to continuing our partnership to prepare students for the real world.”

Construction is scheduled for completion in early 2022.
