The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has commenced construction of the $898.6m Airport Metro Connector (AMC) transit station.

The AMC Transit Station at Aviation and 96th Street will provide direct access to the metro system of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US.

The new light rail station is marked as the ninth station along the Crenshaw/LAX Line, which is currently under construction.

It will connect with the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Automated People Mover project, which directly connects with the passenger terminals of the airport.

The project aims to provide quick, reliable, and convenient connection for passengers traveling between LAX and the regional bus as well as the rail transit system, with minimal impact to airport facilities and surrounding communities.

The station will include platforms to access the Metro light-rail trains, and 16-bay bus plaza and terminal facility for Metro and other municipal bus operators that include Culver City Bus, GTrans (Gardena), Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Torrance Transit, and Beach Cities Transit.

It will also include transportation hub with bicycle parking, a new Metro customer service centre, public restrooms and direct access to the future LAX Automated People Mover (APM).

The facility will also feature commercial space for tenants and pedestrian plaza with passenger pick-up and drop-off area.

Metro stated that the railway station portion of the project, which is slated to be completed in 2024, will also include two light rail platforms.

Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins said: “This is an exciting project that will serve as the ‘Gateway’ to LAX for future generations — just as LAX has long served as the gateway to Southern California for so many millions of people.

“The AMC station will also provide multiple connections to the Metro system and will help airport-area employees and travelers easily get to wherever they need to go in our region.”
