Construction has been commenced on a new $46m visitor centre at Niagara Falls State Park in New York, the US.

The new 28,000ft2 facility will be a gateway to the park along the Niagara River Corridor and will welcome new and returning sightseers.

It will replace the 35-year-old original visitor centre to create more open views of the Niagara Falls.

The new centre will improve the visitor experience and increase the length of visits in the park.

It will include new ticketing and information desks, interpretive museum space, new concession spaces, restrooms as well as the associated support spaces.

Slated to open in Spring 2023, the new welcome centre will also include rooftop solar array, green roof elements along with a separate restroom building.

Amenities of the centre will include new accessible paths, plantings, outdoor exhibits, and interpretive elements.

The existing 7,000ft2 regional administration building, which is located adjacent to the new facility, will also be modified to include regional archives, a multi-purpose community room, and offices for Niagara regional interpretive staff.

New York State senator Rob Ortt said: “The creation of this new welcome center will allow visitors to explore all of the history and experiences that our beautiful state park has to offer while expanding upon the completion of last year’s Welcome Plaza.

“The continued efforts to grow the connection between our state park and downtown Niagara Falls will only serve to benefit both entities and the residents who operate shops and restaurants within our city’s business district.

“I commend New York State’s continued commitment to the beautification and increased visitor immersion at the natural wonder of the world we are lucky enough to have located in our backyard.”
