Clark Contracts has been selected to undertake the refurbishment of 11-13 South St Andrews Street in Edinburgh, Scotland, transforming the site into a capsule hotel for TARKA.

The new capsule hotel, situated just off St Andrew Square, is said to be inspired by Japanese capsule hotels but reimagined for a British clientele.

TARKA emphasises the importance of creating modern and comfortable capsules for its guests.

The development will repurpose a currently vacant mixed-use building, which formerly served as a job centre, office, and retail space.

The seven-storey hotel will house 242 beds and feature a rooftop Japanese restaurant and bar, offering views of Calton Hill, Edinburgh Castle, and the Firth of Forth.

Studio LBA is leading the architectural and principal design aspects for the project.

Axiom Project Services is managing the project and quantity surveying, with additional expertise provided by interior design studio S+CO and civil and structural engineer Narro.

The project will also involve planning consultant Derek Scott Planning, mechanical and electrical engineer Parrish Consultancy, fire engineer OFR Consultants, and acoustic engineer RMP.

TARKA Hotels founder James Scott said: “TARKA was born from our experiences staying in capsule hotels during visits to Japan – trips that sparked a real passion to bring this modern, affordable accommodation concept to the UK.

“We aim to redefine the traditional hostel by offering quiet, private pods that strike the perfect balance between the cost-efficiency of hostels and the comfort and design of modern hotels. TARKA is built with urban travellers, tourists, and business guests in mind – prioritising affordability, central locations, and sleek, smart design.”

In March this year, Clark Contracts topped out The Pepper Mill student accommodation project on Dunedin Street in Edinburgh.
