Cincinnati Children’s has started construction on a new $99m inpatient mental health facility in College Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio, US.

The new five-story, 160,000ft2 behavioural health facility aims to help children in mental health crisis in the region and across the nation.

Cincinnati Children’s president and CEO Michael Fisher said: “Cincinnati Children’s has a deep commitment to mental health and a great inpatient facility and residential facility, but we’re now transforming that to make sure it’s got all of the right services, all of the right privacy, and all of the right capabilities to continue providing the very best care.

“As we point to the future, as a community and society, we have to prioritize education, prevention, treatment, and even a cure for mental health disorders.”

The facility will replace the existing inpatient building located on the College Hill campus and will be 68% bigger than the existing one. It will also feature private rooms for all inpatients.

With private rooms in place, families will have the option to spend more time with the child and also stay overnight.

The new behavioural health facility will also provide dedicated spaces for group therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy.

Additionally, it will accommodate patients with neuro-development disorders.

The facility is being funded through a gift of $36m from the Convalescent Hospital Fund for Children, which will cover one-third of the construction cost.

Another third of the project cost will come from Cincinnati Children’s operating revenues. An additional $36m is still required from philanthropic supporters in the community.

Convalescent Hospital Fund for Children board chair Susan Shelton said: “The Convalescent Hospital Fund for Children has a long history of supporting children who struggle with chronic illnesses, but who haven’t always been served.

“We have supported children with mental health conditions and children with developmental challenges and brain injury.

“Through the work that we’re doing together to raise the funds to build this building, we actually can make a difference. Treatment does make a difference for kids with mental illness.”

The new building is slated to open in 2023.
