Real estate company Castellum has awarded a contract to Swedish construction and development company Skanska to build new Nordic headquarters for energy firm E.ON in Sweden.

Under the contract, which is valued about SEK920m ($88.7m), Skanska will build E.ON’s headquarters in the Nyhamnen district, located near Malmö’s Central Station.

The building, which covers 36,000m2 of gross area, will have between eight and nine floors and will comprise a restaurant, gym and roof terrace.

Skanska is planning to commence construction on the project in the second quarter of 2020 with the office building scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2023.

Castellum CEO Henrik Saxborn said: “In these times of concern caused by the Covid-19 virus, it feels gratifying to continue investing in important city-development projects such as E.ON’s new headquarters.

“This project is Castellum’s largest ever and it will strengthen both our cash flow and balance sheet with a long leasing contract and a solid customer.

“Along with our equally large upcoming project, the new Swedish National Courts Administration building right across the street, the E.ON headquarters will further consolidate our position as a long-term city developer in central Malmö.”

The contract follows the signing of a 12-year leasing agreement between Castellum and E.ON for the new office building, which is estimated to cost approximately SEK1.3bn ($125.3m).

Of the approximately 27,000m2 leasable area of the Castellum’s new building in Nyhamnen, E.ON will rent about 24,000m2.

Separately, Castellum is planning to build new Swedish National Courts building in Nyhamnen. It will comprise the Malmö District Court, Malmö’s Administrative Court, and the Malmö Regional Tenancies Tribunal.

Upon completion, the area is expected to grow into a mixed-commerce city district, involving about 13,000 new workplaces and 6,000 residences.
