Calgro M3, a South African property developer, has broken ground on a student accommodation building for the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.
To be located within the Belhar CBD development, a mixed-use residential project, the accommodation will be built in three parcels of land located next to one another.

The 44 000m² site will border the southern boundary of the University of the Western Cape campus and is situated close to the Unibell train station and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Comprising of six buildings with nearly 2,720 beds, the accommodation will have different types of sleeping quarters for students including single and double rooms and double room apartments.
Additionally, there will be suitable accommodation and ablution facilities designed specifically for disabled students.

The accommodation is expected to have several communal facilities within the residences such as bathrooms, lounges, study and dining areas, kitchens, laundries and tuckshops, along with gym areas and residence manager apartments.

By GlobalDataAll the six buildings will also be equipped with Wi-Fi, security fences, access control and CCTV, as per Government Gazetted specifications. The housing will also feature landscaped gardens.
Construction started on the Unibell precinct last month and is due for completion in phases between October 2021 and February 2022.
Calgro M3 CEO Wikus Lategan said: “Calgro M3 is extremely proud to be involved with this project, which will help ease the requirement for affordable student accommodation in Cape Town. Current estimates are that there is a shortage of 300,000 beds for students nationwide.
“We are likewise considering developing private student residences at Belhar for another third party for this very reason.”
The project is being funded 50% by the University of the Western Cape and the remaining 50% of funding comes from the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
Once completed, the university will have full ownership and management control of the residences.
