Royal Boskalis Westminster (Boskalis) has secured two dredging contracts in Finland from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the Port of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki with a combined contract value of €32m.

As part of the contracts, Boskalis will deepen de Vuosaari fairway and harbour basin from 11 to 13m in the Port of Helsinki and will use a part of the dredging material to develop Helsinki’s Hernesaari area, close to the centre of the city.

The contracts will begin immediately and are expected to be completed by the end of next year.

For harbour deepening, a volume of one million cubic metres of clay and moraine material will be dredged and 800,000 cubic metres of rock will be removed from the seabed by means of drilling and blasting.

Part of this material will be transported to the Hernesaari area, using a vessel and will be reused for the reclamation of six hectares of land on which offices and residential housing for 7,000 people are expected to be developed in the coming years.

To complete the activities, Boskalis will use a variety of specialised dredging equipment including two large backhoe dredgers, a grab dredger, a drilling barge and several hopper barges.

Last December, the company secured a contract to connect an offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to an onshore power plant in El Salvador.

The contract was awarded by Energia del Pacifico (EDP), a 378MW liquefied natural gas (LNG)-to-power infrastructure project at the Port of Acajutla, El Salvador. The project was supposed to begin early this year and is expected to be operational by the end of next year.

As per the project, a 2km-long gas pipeline will be constructed, connecting the onshore power plant to the offshore FSRU including mooring and hook-up.

It will include the construction of a micro tunnel from the power plant into the sea followed by dredging of an offshore pipeline trench. Boskalis will use one of its vessels to pull a 24-inch pipeline through the micro tunnel and trench.
