Real estate solutions provider for the life science and technology industries, BioMed Realty, has received approval from Emeryville city, California, the US to expand its flagship Emeryville Center of Innovation campus.

This expansion project will support the growing Life Science sector of the Bay Area. Expansion plan includes building 910,000 ft2 of new Class A laboratory and office space in the 12-acre campus.

The initial phase of expansion that encompasses 265,000 ft2 is scheduled to begin in 2022.

Emeryville Center of Innovation campus is in close proximity to the public market, Bay Street’s shopping area, and numerous other luxurious amenities. The campus envelops three acres of green space that is open to the public and integrated with the neighbourhood and the community.

Emeryville Mayor Dianne Martinez said: “The impact of the Emeryville Center of Innovation within our community is significant. This is a legacy project that was first envisioned by our city’s leadership in 1995. BioMed Realty is a global leader in developing life science commercial real estate and this investment will honour Emeryville’s long history of scientific discovery. This campus will lead to jobs and create a positive economic impact for our region. The vital research and development that will be done here will lead to positive outcomes around the world.”

Zymergen, a biotechnology company headquartered in Emeryville, had signed a lease in 2019 for 100% of the existing research building on the Emeryville Center of Innovation campus for its new corporate headquarters and also to assist in the expansion of its operations.

BioMed Realty is funding this project with huge capital in a bid to transform this 303,000ft2 asset into an improved Class A facility, planned to be completed in early 2023.
