Belgium’s radioactive waste management agency ONDRAF/NIRAS has selected the NucleusSafe joint venture (JV) to undertake the civil works for the country’s first near-surface disposal facility for nuclear waste in Dessel.

According to JV partner BESIX, this project is a critical component of Belgium’s strategy for the safe, long-term storage of “low- and intermediate-level short-lived” radioactive waste.

Construction of the facility is scheduled to start after the summer and will be executed in phases over the coming decades.

The JV is stated to bring together a wealth of experience in complex infrastructure projects.

Along with BESIX, the JV also includes BESIX subsidiary Vanhout, along with Deckx and Stadsbader Contractors.

BESIX Belgium-Luxembourg general manager Mark Beyst said: We sincerely thank our client for the trust placed in us to deliver this nuclear waste disposal facility. The project is a natural fit with BESIX’s long-standing expertise in managing and constructing complex, high-performance industrial infrastructure.”

“Building on our successful delivery of the foundation pit for the PALLAS reactor in the Netherlands, the spent fuel storage facilities in Doel and Tihange in Belgium, and a state-of-the-art nuclear medicine radioisotope facility in Sydney, we are proud to once again support the development of essential infrastructure in the nuclear sector.”

“Together with our joint venture partners, and especially with our subsidiary Vanhout, we remain fully committed to delivering this project with the highest standards of safety, technical precision, and operational excellence.”

BESIX Watpac, the Australian construction subsidiary of BESIX Group, is currently engaged in the design and construction of the Woolworths Sydney Chilled and Fresh Distribution Centre in Eastern Creek, Australia.

Additionally, BESIX has reached a significant milestone at the POST Rotterdam project in the Netherlands. This development, which combines the conservation of a historic site with modern design, recently topped out at 155m.
