Bechtel, an engineering, construction, and project management company, has been tasked with the delivery of three main phases of the 1.3GW AC Mammoth Solar facility in Indiana, US.
The project, awarded by domestic developer and renewable energy operator Doral Renewables, is expected to increase Indiana’s total solar capacity by more than 20%.
The Mammoth Solar facility, set to be one of the US’ largest solar installations, entered a new phase of development as Bechtel received full notice to proceed (FNTP) from Doral Renewables.
Bechtel is responsible for designing, engineering, and constructing the Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II phases, representing 900MW AC of the project’s capacity.
Construction preparatory works began earlier this year, and the FNTP marks a transition to permanent construction activities.
Bechtel will oversee the installation of solar panels, power cables, and substations, applying its digital delivery approach and autonomous technologies to enhance delivery.

By GlobalDataThe project’s scale is significant, with plans to install approximately two million solar modules over the next two years, half of which will be manufactured in the US.
The construction phase is expected to generate more than 1,200 jobs, with 15% of these allotted for apprenticeships. This is stated to provide hands-on training for young professionals and those new to the construction industry.
Bechtel general manager of renewables and clean power Scott Austin said: “Bechtel is proud to partner with Doral to deliver one of the nation’s largest solar projects.
”A project of this scale depends on strong collaboration with local building trades to ensure access to the skilled workforce needed. We’re working closely with craft professionals, creating high-quality jobs, and being a reliable partner to the community as we help deliver Mammoth Solar and increase the supply of clean, reliable solar power.”
Upon completion in 2027, Doral Renewables plans to implement agrivoltaics at the site, combining renewable energy generation with agricultural practices.
This approach will allow for livestock grazing and crop cultivation around the solar panels, enabling local landowners to maximise land use and maintain farming operations.
Earlier this year, Bechtel was also selected to manage the design and construction of a utility-scale solar project in Lincoln County, Nevada, US.
