US engineering firm Bechtel has begun construction of two LNG storage tanks for CPC Taichung Phase III LNG import terminal project in Taichung, Taiwan.

Bechtel is undertaking engineering, procurement, and construction of the two 180,000 m3 full containment LNG tanks.

The company, along with CPC and MRY, broke ground on the project to design and build the tanks.

CPC owns and operates the LNG terminal, reported Offshore Energy.

It is expanding its facility to include two full containment tanks and related regasification capacities to meet the rising demand for natural gas and to improve the stability of natural gas supplies in the country.

Once completed, these would become the largest storage tanks to be ever built in Taiwan, Bechtel stated.

Bechtel Energy president Paul Marsden said: “This marks another important step toward meeting the increasing demand for natural gas. Together with CPC Corporation and MRY, we are delivering cleaner, greener, and safer energy to Taiwan, supporting both their energy growth and security.”

“To power the needs of the world, we need LNG and storage capability which is what we are doing here on this site today, by celebrating the start of construction on the largest storage tanks ever to be built in Taiwan.”

Last week, the US Department of Energy appointed a Bechtel company to manage and operate the country’s only deep underground facility for nuclear waste in New Mexico.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located at New Mexico’s Carlsbad.

Tularosa Basin Range Services, which does business as Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO), is a single-purpose entity comprising Bechtel National.

SIMCO will leverage Los Alamos Technical Associates as a New Mexico-based small business teaming subcontractor for this contract.

The contract carries a value of up to $3bn over a decade if all options are exercised.
