Bauer Keller Joint Venture  (BKJV), the 50:50 joint venture between Bauer Technologies and Keller UK, has been awarded a £95m geotechnical work contract by EKFB, the joint venture of four infrastructure firms: Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall.

Geotechnical work will be delivered a part of the C23 section on High Speed 2 (HS2) in the UK.

At peak contract phase, the geotechnical work will require more than 200 ground engineering and foundation experts, who will work at the various site locations.

EKFB is constructing the C23 portion of HS2, the new high-speed line between London and the West Midlands.

The C23 section of HS2 comprises 80km of high-speed rail infrastructure, which will include more than 80 bridges, 15 viaducts, 7km of green tunnels and 30 million m3 of excavation.

BKJV’s scope of work involves constructing piled foundations for the structures, along with the construction of secant piled and slurry walls, in addition to the installation of pressure relief drains.

The preliminary pile testing works have already been completed by BKJV and now the teams are focused upon mobilising to the site in order to begin main works this month onwards.

Bauer Technologies managing director Michael Jones said: “After two and a half years of working collaboratively with EKFB in the planning phase of this project, we are excited to make a start in April on the main works of this section, for what is Europe’s largest infrastructure project. Bauer and Keller have great synergy and a similar culture which makes us perfect partners for each other.’’

Keller Europe president Jim De Waele adds: “BKJV is a return to our successful partnership with Bauer having previously worked together on the London Underground and Crossrail station projects. We’re excited to bring our complementary geotechnical capabilities, experience and capacity to one of the most demanding and exciting transport projects in Europe.”

The contract is scheduled for completion in 2024.
