BAM has secured a £192m contract from an insurance group Legal & General, Sky and NBCUniversal for the construction of Sky Studios Elstree, a new film and television studio to come up just north of London.

Claimed to be the most sustainable film and TV studio in the world, the new studio will have 13 sound stages and will house a range of film and TV productions from Sky Studios and NBCUniversal.

The project, which is expected to be opened next year, will use circular economy approaches to cut down waste over the Studios’ lifetime.

It also aligns with Legal & General’s drive to deliver major environmental, social and governance (ESG) projects.

Sky Studios Elstree was designed by UMC Architects and the other working partners include Fairhurst, Hoare Lea, and Potter Raper, who were responsible for quantity surveying and project management of the scheme.

Once operational, the new facility will source renewable power with the capacity to generate up to 20% of power on-site through solar energy instead of using gas or fossil fuels to power day-to-day running of the site when it is operational.

Additionally, Sky Studios Elstree is expected to create nearly 900 jobs during the construction phase and around 1,500 jobs upon commencement of operations.

Sky Studios chief operating officer Caroline Cooper said: “Sky Studios Elstree will enable us to produce more and more Sky Originals for our customers and is a key cornerstone of Sky’s commitment to become Net Zero Carbon by 2030.

“Working with BAM, we will select materials and use construction methods that support our goal to build the most sustainable film and TV studio in the world.”
