The £84.5m, 63-bed facility will replace the care and support services currently offered at the hospital’s Ablett Unit and at the Bryn Hesketh inpatient older persons mental health facility in Colwyn Bay.

The plans for the new facility include a 14-bed psychiatric ward for older persons, with en-suite facilities and enhanced recreational areas.

Furthermore, a 13-bed dementia care evaluation unit will also be built, with provisions of facilities for patients’ families and carers to stay overnight. A secure courtyard, en-suite facilities to all bedrooms, and recreational and therapy spaces will also be developed.

Two purpose-built 16-bed adult wards with a de-stimulation space will be developed on each ward to provide a safe nursing environment for high acuity patients.

The new building will offer mental health care services to adults from Conwy, Denbighshire and parts of Flintshire.

BAM has secured this contract under the NHS Building for Wales framework.

Subject to final approvals, construction is anticipated to commence in 2024, with its completion slated for 2026.

BAM construction director and healthcare lead for the North West of England and North Wales Rob Bailey said: “The BAM North West team is delighted to have the opportunity to work with the BCU Health Board at Glan Clwyd once again.

“We have established a strong and successful relationship with the University Health Board through previously delivered projects and we look forward to continuing this success with this important healthcare project for the region.”

The core focus of the design will be on sustainability, aligning with the Welsh Government’s climate emergency approach.

Biophilic principles will be deployed via air-sourced heat pumps and photovoltaic cells on the roof of the new facility.

Design partners for the project are Powell Dobson as architects, Ramboll as structural engineers, Arup as M&E engineers, and Lorne Stuart as MEP installers.

Gleeds will offer project management and cost advisor services to BCU Health Board.
