BAM Construction, a subsidiary of Royal BAM Group, has started work on three new schools in the East Midlands with a total value of approximately £65m.

The Department for Education has appointed the construction company for the work under its national education framework.

The three schools include Castle Mead Academy and Avanti Fields School, both in Leicester and Derby Cathedral School.

The schools will be developed and delivered through ‘one BAM’ approach, which combines a number of BAM’s companies, specifically, BAM Design.

Located on the industrial railway siding adjacent to the Great Northern Road, Derby Cathedral School is a 1,200-place 6FE school.

The site is set out with a new three-storey, predominantly brick-built building with a separate sports block that was arranged around an entrance plaza.

BAM said that internally the building develops the existing school’s five-house approach.

The Castle Mead Academy in Leicester is a 1,200-place 8FE new academy, which will be added to the schools run by the Mead Educational Trust.

To be constructed on a brownfield site which was the former Kirby and West Dairy, facing Friars Mill across the River Soar.

The company said that the new three-storey building was developed with enhanced, vertical standing-seam panel facades to complement the river elevation.

Being built on a green-field site in the city, Avanti Fields School is an inclusive Hindu faith school that is open for all students, regardless of faith.

It will include two primary classes and 26 additional nursery places along with an integrated sports block.

The school is located on the outskirts of Leicester and bounded to the north by a residential area, to the east by Gateway College and to the south a farm.

BAM Design has been appointed as the lead architect for Derby Cathedral School and Castle Mead Academy and Maber is the architect for Avanti Fields.

BAM Design is also providing the structural and services engineering services for all the three schools.

Furthermore, Mott Macdonald is the project manager for Castle Mead Academy and Avanti Fields, and AECOM is the project manager for Derby Cathedral School.
