Balfour Beatty has secured several contracts worth a total of over $235m to construct essential K-12, correctional/justice and federal projects across California, US.

These projects have been awarded on behalf of local Unified School Districts (USD), San Diego County and Marine Corps.

It secured a $99m lease-leaseback contract for Fontana USD’s new Secondary Academy. This contract will require the company to deliver a secondary school in northern Fontana. Following completion, the school will be a two-storey, 154,670ft2 building featuring an administration centre, cafeteria and various learning spaces such as vocational classrooms, science labs, etc. Preconstruction services are underway, with construction slated to commence in the Fall of 2023.

Balfour Beatty won a $56.5m contract of Marine Corps Recruit Depo, San Diego’s P-315 Mess Hall Replacement project. This Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) project involves the construction of a new 100,427ft2 dining facility for Marine Corps recruits that will serve 6,000 personnel and offer 1,800 meals per day. The project will feature all important site improvements and site preparations, loading dock, telecommunications, emergency generator, mechanical and electrical utilities, fire suppression system, irrigation, drainage, landscaping, parking and exterior lighting.

Under a $16m contract, the company is responsible for Fontana USD’s Sierra Lakes Elementary School renovation. This project requires the company to deliver renovations to the school’s classroom building and Kindergarten classrooms. It will provide 15 new 4th and 5th grade classrooms in a two-story building that includes a second-level outdoor classroom area overlooking the San Bernardino Mountain range. Following completion of construction of the new building, renovations to the existing Kindergarten classrooms will commence. Preconstruction is slated to commence in Fall 2022, with completion expected in Fall 2024.

The company won a modernisation contract of SDUSD King Chavez Academy of Excellence. Under this $28m project, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for transforming the modular campus into a new ‘state-of-the-art’ education facility. The firm will replace all portable classrooms and current administration building with new, two-storey classroom buildings, a one-storey administration building, and a food service modular building and lunch shelter. The contract also requires Balfour Beatty to make site improvements to replace all existing hardscape and landscape areas.

Among the other contracts that Balfour Beatty secured are a $4m lease-leaseback contract of La Mesa-Spring Valley School District’s (LMSVSD) Entry Improvements and Slope Mitigation project, a $3.4m contract of San Diego County’s East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility Renovation and House Softening Improvements project.
