The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority (RDUAA) has awarded a contract to Balfour Beatty to construct the new 5L/23R runway replacement project.

Valued at nearly $400m, the 5L/23R replacement programme is part of Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s (RDU) 25-year master plan, Vision 2040. It is said to be most significant capital project of the airport.

The project will move the runway approximately 500ft to the northwest and enables the expansion of the Terminal 2 (T2) concourse of RDU.

Work on the project include transformation of the existing runway into a taxiway as well as the construction of a new primary runway.

For the project, Balfour Beatty will be work as construction manager at-risk (CMAR).

The company’s scope of work under the contract involves preconstruction and construction services for the new runway.
