Balfour Beatty has been awarded a contract to deliver £13m City Centre West to East Cycle Link & Street Improvements project (CCWEL) in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The company was appointed as the contractor for the project using the Scape Procure Scotland ‘National Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Framework – Scotland’ framework agreement.

It has also completed the pre-construction phase for the CCWEL project along with the required site investigations.

The CCWEL project will connect Roseburn to Leith Walk with direct cycle route, which will provide more space for walking, wheeling and cycling.

The route is split into three sections and the work on the project will include creation of two-way segregated cycleways from Roseburn to Haymarket which will connect to one-way segregated cycleways on each side of Melville Street.

The two-way cycleways will also connect George Street with Picardy Place through St David Street, Queen Street and York Place.

Following engagement with the public, the preliminary designs for the project were approved in December 2016.

Sustrans will be the main sponsor for the CCWEL project, and the additional funding will be provided by the Scottish Government and the council’s transport budget.

Work on the project is expected to commence in January next year and estimated to take nearly 18 months.

The City of Edinburgh Council Finance and Resources vice convener Joan Griffiths was quoted saying: “We want to support people to consider alternatives to private car journeys, but to do this we need to provide safe, direct routes for walking, wheeling and cycling. CCWEL will do just that.

“The council is working on a range of exciting, ambitious projects to transform the city which will make it easier for people to get around by foot, wheel, bike and public transport, as well as creating a much more welcoming environment to spend time in. This is the kind of change needed if we are to become a truly sustainable city for future generations.”
