UK-based infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has secured a £63m contract from Highways England to upgrade a section of A19 road in the north-east of England, UK.

Under the contract, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the development, design and delivery of the critical dual carriageway upgrades on the A19 between Norton and Wynyard.

The scope of the contract will include the transformation of a 5km stretch of the A19 that will increase the capacity from two to three lanes.

To deliver the project, Balfour Beatty said that it will use noise-reducing concrete that will help to reduce noise pollution in the region.

The construction firm will engage with local small and medium-size businesses for all drainage, kerbing and fencing works.

The project is expected to create 150 construction jobs, of which 10% will be from the local area and will also provide six apprenticeship positions during the peak construction phase.

Construction works on the project are expected to begin in spring this year and are planned to be completed in spring 2022.

Balfour Beatty Highways business managing director Phil Clifton said: “This vital project is critical to the Government’s initiative for growth in the North East of England.

“We are delighted to be able to provide the road-user with a more sustainable road network which will ease congestion and improve journey times as well as working with the local community to give back to the areas in which we operate.”

Highways England project manager Keith Bradley said: “Drivers who use this busy route have had to put up with congestion, particularly during rush hour, while the road surface has caused a noise issue for people living nearby.

“Our improvements address the unreliable journey times and the noise, and allow us to support the Tees Valley economy, ahead of proposed employment and housing developments in the area.”
