A joint venture of Balfour Beatty and Graham Contracting has completed the first phase of the North Metro Rail Line (N Line), the new commuter rail corridor of Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver, Colorado, US.

Balfour Beatty served as a managing partner of the JV, known as Regional Rail Partners (RRP).

The JV has recently completed work on the 21km section of the N Line, which included the installation of six new stations, five public-grade and one private crossing, quiet zones as well as 2,480 passenger parking spaces.

The section runs from Denver Union Station to Eastlake-124th Station in Thornton with trains operating every 30 minutes.

The overall 29.77km North Metro Rail Line will run from Denver Union Station to Highway 7 through Commerce City, Thornton, and Northglenn State Highway 7 in North Adams County.

The $429m project, which is claimed to be the first electrified commuter rail line, is operated by RTD, to enhance the transit options from the city’s northern suburbs to downtown Denver.

Balfour Beatty said that the North Metro Rail Line is part of RTD’s FasTracks 196.34km of commuter rail and light rail expansion programme, a voter-approved transit expansion plan to transform transportation for the Denver metro region.

In addition to the FasTracks programme, the team has also provided several components for the recently completed E, F and R light rail lines of Southeast Rail Extension, and the A, B and G Lines of the Eagle Commuter Rail Network.

Balfour Beatty rail operations US vice president Roger Wilson said: “We’re honoured to work with our partners to deliver another design-build transit project on behalf of RTD’s FasTracks programme.

“We are excited to open the first phase of the N Line to better meet the transportation needs of the larger Denver community.”

Once the funds are available, the remaining 8.9km of the North Metro Rail Line will be built.
