Jacksonville Transport Authority has appointed Balfour Beatty’s Vision 2 Reality (V2R) team to deliver the $44m Bay Street Innovation Corridor project in the US.

The V2R consortium also includes WGI, Beep, Superior Construction Company Southeast, Stantec Consulting Services and Miller Electric.

The Bay Street Innovation Corridor project represents the initial phase of Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C) autonomous vehicle service.

The three-phase U2C aims to convert and expand the Skyway automated people move into an autonomous vehicle (AV) network in Downtown Jacksonville and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Balfour Beatty and its partners will oversee 60% design of the Bay Street Innovation Corridor and use integrated progressive design build methods.

Upon completion, the U2C autonomous vehicle service will expand Jacksonville’s current skyway to 16.093km from 4.02km.

Jacksonville Transportation Authority CEO Nathaniel Ford said: “This award represents a major milestone for the Ultimate Urban Circulator, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and Downtown Jacksonville.

“We are confident the Balfour Beatty team and its partners will deliver a world-class project on behalf of the taxpayers of Jacksonville, placing our community at the forefront of innovation.”

Work on the Bay Street Innovation Corridor marks Balfour Beatty’s second project for Jacksonville Transportation Authority.

In May last year, the company has delivered Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center at LaVilla in Jacksonville, Florida.

Balfour Beatty Construction senior vice president John Harris said: “We are honoured to be selected by Jacksonville Transportation Authority to construct another successful project for the Jacksonville community.

“To be a part of the Ultimate Urban Circulator program is an opportunity of a lifetime, and we look forward to remaining a Relentless Ally to our client, our partners and the community as we work to provide and innovative and revolutionary transportation network for the future of Jacksonville.”
