The location for Te Hono was approved by Whau Local Board in December 2018.

CMP Construction was selected after a competitive retendering process that involved 20 interested companies.

Auckland Urban Development Office priority location director Richard Davison said: “CMP Construction came out on top, not just for their expertise but for their vision. They are aiming to exceed our social procurement targets, will create new jobs within the local community and are committed to achieving at least a Green Star 5 sustainability rating for the build.”

Construction is set to commence this year, with the opening anticipated in mid-2027.

Once complete, the Te Hono project will include facilities such as a library space with a children’s area, a community hall, street-level and reserve-level community rooms, a community kitchen, creative spaces, a parenting room, and essential amenities such as toilets and others.

While Auckland Council focuses on constructing the building that includes library and community hub, the Urban Development Office will enhance the town square and the surrounding outdoor areas.

Preparatory activities have been underway since November 2024, when existing structures were cleared to make way for the new development.

Early site works such as brick paving and water meters started in June this year.

Whau Local board chair Kay Thomas said: “Te Hono will be a place to connect, celebrate and build community for generations to come and I’m looking forward to watching our community hub become a reality as momentum speeds up.”
