AtkinsRéalis Group, an engineering services and nuclear company, has been awarded a seven-year contract to refurbish the historic Isle-Maligne hydropower plant in Québec, Canada, by Rio Tinto, a metal and mining company.

Built in 1926 as the reportedly world’s largest hydropower plant at the time, the Isle-Maligne facility is poised for a significant overhaul.

AtkinsRéalis will be responsible for execution engineering, integrated procurement, and construction management services for the project.

The refurbishment project will involve the replacement of eight out of the 12 turbine-alternator groups and the modernisation of water passages.

Additionally, AtkinsRéalis will update the architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical components of the plant, utilising advanced technologies and industry best practices.

The company has experience in hydropower plant refurbishments, having previously completed projects such as the Shipshaw Expansion project for Rio Tinto, the Calabogie Redevelopment project for OPG, and the John Hart Generating Station Replacement project for BC Hydro.
