The Danish Road Directorate has appointed Atkins Danmark, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, as lead consultant for the Vestfyn Line in Denmark.

The Vestfyn Line is a new $430m high-speed railway on the island of Funen.

This 35km, 250 km/h double-track and electrified railway line between Odense and Middelfart will lessen commute times across the country’s key east-west corridor.

Furthermore, it will free up capacity on current non-high-speed lines.

Atkins will work along with NIRAS, a Danish engineering consultancy, for the design of the railway in partnership with The Danish Road Directorate and Banedanmark.

Banedanmark is responsible for maintenance and traffic control across the country’s railway network.

Atkins Denmark CEO Eva Rindom said: “We’re very pleased to have won this contract and look forward to delivering a transformational project with NIRAS, drawing on our global high-speed rail experience, innovative use of digital technology, and sustainable thinking.”

The Vestfyn Line is anticipated to be commissioned by the end of 2028.

The railway project includes an interim highway where the new lane will cross the current highway.

Construction of two flyovers – one at Middelfart and the other at Odense – are also planned under this project.

This contract adds to Atkins’ high-speed rail portfolio, which comprises Copenhagen to Ringsted Line in Denmark; Sweden’s first high-speed mainline; Jakarta – Bandung high-speed railway in Indonesia; and UK’s High Speed 1 and 2.
