Astaldi Group bags €356m Romanian motorway contract

Astaldi Group has been awarded a EPC contract, worth €356m, for the construction of more than 30km of the Sibiu-Pitesti Motorway in Romania.

Under the contract, Astaldi Group will be responsible for the design and construction of Lot 5 of the Sibiu-Pitesti Motorway.

Of the planned work duration of 60 months, 12 months are allotted for design and 48 months for construction work.

The motorway will be built for Romania’s state road company Compania Națională de Administrare a Infrastructurii Rutiere S.A. Romania (CNAIR).

In a statement, Astaldi said: “The contract is financed partly with EU funds (85%) and partly with the State budget (15%) and includes the adjustment of contract prices starting from the date of the submission of the bid.

“Moreover, an advance payment is envisaged in the contract, both at the start of the design phase and at the start of the construction.”

The 123km-long motorway from Sibiu to Pitesti is situated on the Trans European Rhine-Danube Corridor, and will serve as one of the Europe's most important links to the Black Sea.

The motorway is expected to be the first motorway through Carpathia and the first to connect Transylvania with Walachia.

Last year, Austrian contractor PORR has been awarded a contract to design and build Lot 1 of the motorway from Sibiu to Pitesti in Romania.

Under the contract, worth around €129m, PORR will be responsible for the design and construction of the four-lane section from Sibiu to Boita in the heart of Romania.

The scope of the work involves the installation of 12 bridge structures, including a 650m-long viaduct over a valley as part of the motorway as well as a bridge over the road. Work on the project is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
