Novelis, an aluminum solutions provider, has broken ground on a $365m advanced recycling centre for automotive in Guthrie, Kentucky, US.

Once constructed, the facility will have an annual casting capacity of 240kt of sheet ingot, and expected to cut down the company’s carbon emissions by over one million tonnes annually.

The new recycling facility will also add around 140 new jobs in Guthrie and will be constructed close to Novelis’ current automotive finishing plant in Guthrie, Kentucky.

Presently, the Guthrie automotive finishing facility employs 150 people and expects to expand to 190 employees over the coming two years.

Novelis North America president and executive vice president Tom Boney said: “This groundbreaking marks a major milestone in our ongoing commitment to sustainability and recycling, and also supports our automotive customers’ carbon reduction targets.

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky continues to be a great partner to Novelis. We are proud to build on the rich 40-year history of our aluminum recycling operations in Kentucky, and look forward to deepening our relationships to ensure our facility has a lasting, beneficial impact in the region.”

The new recycling centre is expected to become operational in 2024.

It will feature ‘industry-leading’ processes and capabilities, including advanced shredding and sorting technology, besides energy-efficient innovations.

These capabilities and processes will support the company’s sustainability goal to cut down energy intensity by 10% by 2026 and become net carbon neutral by 2050 or even earlier.

Guthrie Plant Manager Tom Lilienthal said: “We’re grateful to have celebrated this occasion with our employees, community leaders and the great Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

Besides the Guthrie automotive finishing facility, Novelis has an aluminum beverage can recycling plant in Berea and the Logan Aluminum joint venture in Russellville, thereby employing 1,600 people in Kentucky.
