French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has secured a contract to design, build and maintain the transportation system for Toulouse Metropole’s third metro line in France.

The contract worth more than €470m is for the third metro line of Toulouse Metropole and new 27km-long metro line, called Toulouse Aerospace Express. The metro line includes 21 stations and will serve the aviation labour pool.

The company said that the order will eventually worth €713m, including all the options.

The Toulouse Aerospace Express project is said to be part of a drive to increase the city’s appeal with the help of sustainable, inclusive mobility.

Alstom said that a tranche of the contract guarantees a transportation capacity of 5,000 passengers per hour in each direction or pphpd, along with options for up to 10,000 pphpd.

The order also includes Alstom’s “Systems” solutions including Metropolis trains and Urbalis 400 CBTC solution for driverless operation as well as Hesop reversible substations.

The scope of the contract includes platform screen doors, along with a dynamic system for load indication, and the track including the laying with the automated solution Appitrack.

The order also includes six years of maintenance along with an option for 12 years of maintenance.

Alstom France president Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud said: “Alstom has submitted a very competitive system offer, while proposing its latest technologies and innovations on the various subsystems (vehicles, signalling, infrastructure and power supply).

“This order will enable us to continue developing our skills in France in all these areas, as well as our presence in the region of Occitanie, already in full expansion with our centres of excellence for Electrical component’ in Toulouse and traction in Tarbes, and soon the Line 3 project team.”

The project is expected to employ more than 600 people in France, including nearly 400 people in the Toulouse metropolitan area during the peak construction phase.
