Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) has appointed the consortium AWA, which includes AFRY with a 33% share, to manage the design and construction oversight of the Twann Tunnel in the country.

The tunnel on the Lake of Bienne is intended to ease traffic congestion in Twann by establishing an underground road connection, which will extend the current Ligerz tunnel at its eastern exit.

This development aims to reroute traffic from the village, thereby enabling the revitalisation of the village centre and improving conditions for both pedestrians and cyclists.

With a total length of 1,924m, the Twann Tunnel comprises a two-way, two-track monotube that is approximately 1,807m long underground.

The project will also feature a technical duct beneath part of the roadway, two symmetrical stop enlargements, and a unilateral stop widening at the eastern portal.

AFRY’s role will involve civil engineering services related to underground construction, road tunnel safety, and structural engineering.

The contract further encompasses material management services, which include analysis, valorisation, treatment design, and geotechnical services.

The estimated value of the contract for AFRY is around Skr42m ($42.9m), to be allocated over multiple years.

AFRY road and rail head Marcel Winter said: “We are proud to contribute to making the infrastructure safer and more sustainable, providing better alleviation of traffic flows and better access to technical facilities underground.”

Prior to this, AFRY reached an agreement to purchase Reta Engenharia, a Brazilian company specialising in project and construction management services, particularly within the mining and metals industry.

Employing over 200 staff members, Reta brings valuable local knowledge that will strengthen AFRY’s operations in critical industrial sectors throughout the Americas.

The addition of Reta’s expertise is expected to enhance AFRY’s existing workforce, which consists of more than 1,200 employees in Brazil.
