Global infrastructure company AECOM has opened an Underground Infrastructure AI Innovation Centre in Singapore, with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

This centre is set to be part of the company’s aim to advance the country’s vision for enhanced sustainable urban development by maximising the use of underground space.

Led by digital professionals having experience in urban planning and infrastructure, the centre will develop AI-based solutions to boost data quality and mapping of underground utilities and protect underground spaces for current and future development projects.

AECOM will also work with educational institutions, industry partners, and relevant agencies to leverage its digital tools for training and skills development.

AECOM Singapore managing director Jee Yi Ying said: “Infrastructure planning in dense urban environments like Singapore demands innovation.

“The Underground Infrastructure AI Innovation Centre represents a bold step forward in how we harness digital tools to solve complex underground design challenges.

“With the support of the EDB, we’re accelerating the future of infrastructure delivery and building capabilities that benefit Singapore and beyond.”

The centre will develop a suite of software to automate workflows related to underground utility design and surveys.

The software is intended to reduce manual checks, support regulatory processes, and help prevent project delays or unnecessary work.

According to the company, the digital tools will assess the accuracy of existing underground data, identify areas with severe space congestion and provide recommendations for underground space use.

The tools will also take into account factors such as constructability, maintainability, and overall feasibility.

These tools will allow the company to streamline its work in utility corridor studies, which typically rely on multiple utility plans and trial trench reports.

The efficiencies gained from this approach are expected to benefit major infrastructure projects in Singapore, stated the company.

EDB Professional Services vice-president and head Junie Fo said: “AECOM’s AI Innovation Centre demonstrates the transformative potential of AI-powered engineering for smarter and more efficient urban planning and development.

“The Innovation Centre will support the development of local talent with advanced digital and engineering capabilities, strengthen Singapore’s position as a global hub for AI innovation and drive innovation in our built environment sector.”

Last month, AECOM received a contract for the redevelopment of the Albert Park Pit Building, a motorsport street circuit in Melbourne, Australia.
