The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide a $180m loan to improve the water supply network in Yangon City, Myanmar.
The financing will be used to build a 34km of the water transmission system, which is expected to transfer 818 million litres of water per day to Yangon.

According to the bank, about less than half of the homes in Yangon have access to piped water.
The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), with support from ADB, is seeking to address the water services issues.
The ADB financing will help the government of Yangon to construct new infrastructure that includes an intake structure at the Ngamoeyeik Reservoir and an online pumping station 900m downstream.
It will also include a dedicated 2.4m-diameter pipeline which is connected to the reservoir to the Nyaungnhapin water treatment plant.

By GlobalDataADB said that the project will support YCDC’s efforts to strengthen the resilience of the water supply system and expand the service areas.
It will also reinforce YCDC’s ability to operate and manage water services, to become more responsive to climate change, to prepare a roadmap to strengthen its self-financing capacity and meet the demand for water services in the city.
ADB principal urban development specialist Alan Baird said: “The Yangon City Water Resilience Project will address critical water infrastructure needs associated with bulk water supply in Yangon City and strengthen water security.
“It will help improve the resilience of the country’s major economic hub and support inclusive, sustainable economic growth.
“Safe, piped water also comes with better sanitation and hygiene, which is critical to controlling the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).”
