Acciona team selected for $2bn Broadway Subway Project in Canada

The Province of British Colombia in Canada has selected a joint venture of Spanish firm Acciona and Italian company Ghella to deliver the C$2.83bn ($2.08m) Broadway Subway Project.

The contract includes the design and construction of 6km of tunnelling, six underground stations and the installation of 700m of the elevated structure.

Said to be a key link in Metro Vancouver’s transportation system, the Broadway Subway Project is a 5.7km extension of the Millennium Line. It runs from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus.

In a statement, Acciona said: “This will be the fifth extension of the metro system that was inaugurated in 1986. Once in service, the journey time on the Millennium Line will take eleven minutes, saving passengers an average of 30 minutes a day while alleviating traffic congestion in the city.”

The joint venture will sign the contract following final negotiations with the Province of British Columbia.

The full team comprise Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada as a proponent and design-build contractor; Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada/Parsons as systems integration contractor; and Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada as tunnel contractor.

The team also includes IBI Group Professional Services (Canada)/Dialog BC Architecture Engineering Interior Design Planning/Mott MacDonald Canada/Ingenieria Especializada Obra Civil e Industrial as a design contractor.

The project is backed by funding from the Government of British Columbia, with contributions from the Government of Canada and the city of Vancouver.

Acciona North America director Carlos Planelles said: “This new contract will mark ACCIONA’s 6th active infrastructure project in BC.

“We are proud to share the trust of the Province of BC and our team is looking forward to develop further connections with our local partners and communities as ACCIONA will be celebrating its 20 anniversary in Canada in 2021.”

Construction of the subway is scheduled to commence in 2020 with the new extension planned for completion in 2025. The project will be delivered using a design-build-finance approach.
