ACCIONA, together with partners Dragados and Rover, has begun excavating a 5.6km tunnel for the Madrid Metro Line 11 extension between the Comillas and Conde de Casal stations.
The project is part of a broader plan to extend the line to 33km, linking Cuatro Vientos and Valdebebas via 20 stations.

The consortium is using ‘Mayrit’, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufactured in Germany. The machine has an outer diameter of 9.4m, measures 98m in length, and weighs 1,500t. It installs segmental lining rings with an inner diameter of 8,340mm and a ring thickness of 320mm.
The contract awarded to the ACCIONA-led group covers a total underground extension of 6.6km.
Works under this contract include constructing five stations, namely Comillas, Madrid Río, Palos de la Frontera, Atocha and Conde de Casal, with Comillas and Madrid Río as new builds.
In addition, the project involves seven emergency exits, five ventilation shafts and the installation of slab track along the new section.
This phase is scheduled for completion in 2027 and represents the initial stage of the broader expansion initiative.
According to the project details, the new corridor will create a direct link between neighbourhoods and recent developments without passing through central areas, offering fewer transfers for passengers.
The corridor is also expected to decrease travel times and alleviate pressure on other lines, such as the Circular Line, especially on the stretch between Plaza Elíptica and Avenida de América.
The extension is among projects submitted for European Union Recovery Fund support, which seeks to accelerate green transition efforts, innovation and cohesion at both social and territorial levels.
The project aligns with the European Investment Bank’s Transport Lending Policy and the Paris Agreement, aiming to encourage greater use of sustainable transport.
It seeks to reduce negative impacts associated with road traffic, including air pollution, noise, greenhouse gas emissions and traffic accidents, while also enhancing access to employment and educational facilities. Last month, ACCIONA secured a contract from the Madrid regional government to construct and operate a public electric vehicle charging hub inside Madrid’s M-30 ring road.
