The new six-storey, 79,000ft² building will house primary care, dental and eye care services as well as behavioural health and substance abuse services, a pharmacy, a physical therapy clinic and community space.

WSHC president and CEO Frederica Williams said: "The new building allows us to accomplish so much more related to improving the health of our community."

"In addition to reaching more patients and increasing our breadth of services, our new building will allow us to address increasing healthcare costs by offering innovative programmes that reduce complications from chronic diseases," Williams said.

The new facility houses the Dana-Farber Mammography Suite and medical oncology consultation through a partnership with Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care.

The new building was part funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provided a $12m grant in 2001.

The US Government provided $80m in federal stimulus funds to the state of Massachussets for eight community-based health centres, four in Boston and one each in New Bedford, Fall River, Fitchburg and Lowell.

The Whittier Street Health Center’s annual capacity will be 220,000 patient visits, compared to the old location’s 70,000 in 2011.

The health centre’s design incorporates many green features and is planning to seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.
