A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11883795B2) discloses an innovative catalyst for the decomposition of ammonia. The catalyst comprises an activated carbon carrier with a specific surface area of 850 m2/g or more, loaded with a combination of cerium (Ce) and zirconium (Zr) metals. Notably, the amount of cerium is higher than that of zirconium in the catalyst. Additionally, the patent specifies that the metal loading on the carrier should be in the range of about 0.15 parts to about 10 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the carrier.

Furthermore, the patent describes a method for decomposing ammonia in an ammonia-containing gas under specific conditions. The method involves the use of ozone and the aforementioned catalyst at a relative humidity of about 70% or higher and a room temperature of about 30°C or lower. The decomposition reaction follows Reaction Scheme 1, where 2 molecules of ammonia react with ozone to produce nitrogen and water. This method offers a novel approach to efficiently decompose ammonia in gas streams, potentially finding applications in various industrial processes where the removal of ammonia is crucial for environmental and operational reasons.
