• Gareth Rees has joined US consultant Hatch Mott MacDonald as systems engineering manager. Based in Millburn, New Jersey, Gareth will cotinue to develop and manage HMM’s Rail and Tunnel Systems practice in the east. Gareth has concentrated on rail transit engineering planning and development and brings with him over 35 years of experience in engineering and engineering management with expertise not only in the field of rail transit, but also in power generation, electrical transmission and distribution, potable and waste water treatment and industrial and process plants.

    Hatch Mott MacDonald‘s Transportation and Tunnels department has also opened a new office in Cleveland Ohio that will be under the supervision of Michael G Vitale PE, vice president.

  • Craig Covil, associate director of consultant Arup in Sydney Australia, was recently elected chairman of the Australian Geomechanics Society Sydney Chapter for the next two years. He was also put forward and elected as the New South Wales representative of the National Board (also for two years). As chairman of Sydney’s Australian Geomechanics Society, Craig also has a seat at the IEAust Sydney Division Committee.
  • US consultant Haley & Aldrich has announced the appointment of Raymond W Henn as president elect of the American Underground Construction Association (AUA). He will become AUA president in 2003. Henn brings over 30 years experience in heavy and underground construction and is vice president and director of Construction Services and Tunnelling for Haley & Aldrich in its Denver office in Colorado. Henn has significant experience in shaft and tunnel excavation and lining, including drill and blast, TBM, roadheader and NATM excavation in hard rock, mixed ground, and soft ground conditions.
  • Golder Associates, one of the world’s largest employee owned environmental and engineering consulting firms has hired Senior Earthquake Geologist Dr Alan G Hull. Based in the California office, Hull, the New Zealand earthquake scientist, has accumulated 20 years experience in research and applied earthquake studies and has evaluated hazards for a range of projects including major hydroelectric dam developments, bridge and road construction and risk assessment for lifeline engineering in urban areas.
  • UK environmental consultancy company Vibrock has announced the appointment of four new consultants. Andy Green joins the company’s personal noise and dust section, Peter Tallantyre rejoins the environmental noise and vibration team, Matthew Stennet will head up the stack emission monitoring department whilst Paul Flynn joins the Scottish office as an environmental consultant.
  • Hermann Paus, founder and president of equipment manufacturer Paus, has retired transferring management to his sons Franz-Josef and Wolfgang, both of whom have worked for the company for 10 years. As a highly respected figure in the mining industry, Paus was appointed Member of the Belorussian Mining Academy last December and also awarded the “Miner’s Fame 2nd Grade” medal in St. Petersburg in 2000. Paus is now chairman of the Supervisory Board and his experience is still available for the Company.
