Ventilation shafts in road and railroad tunnels need regular inspections and maintenance. Back in 1975 Alimak delivered two rack and pinion driven inspection lifts to the two ventilation shafts at the Tauernautobahn Tunnel (E14) in Austria. These two lifts, with a lifting height of 600m, are still used for the regular inspections. Since then additional lifts have been delivered for ventilation shafts in tunnels around the world.
In order to limit investment, Alimak has developed a system with a lift which can be used in a number of shafts in different tunnel projects. A mast or guide rail is permanently installed in the shafts; the transportable inspection lift is stored in a suitable place and can be moved and quickly installed in the actual shaft when needed. The inspection lift can also be equipped with a working platform in order to carry out repair work in the shaft in a safe and practical way.

American Warming and Ventilating (AWV) has recently developed and successfully tested a tunnel ventilation, smoke and fire damper that will operate at 400ºC for two hours. These dampers are most commonly installed in tunnel ceilings for fume and smoke extraction.
The new dampers have been specially designed to cope with the expansion of the steel damper at the elevated temperature and the actuators are protected by an insulated enclosure that ensures that the maximum operating temperature of the actuators is not exceeded within the specified time period.
The test method was to install the damper together with its thermally insulated actuator in a large oven so that the entire working damper was enclosed within it. When the temperature in the oven reached 400ºC, the time was noted. It was then operated three times at 15 minute intervals for a further two hours, after which it was allowed to cool. After cooling, the entire damper continued to work normally. For a lower temperature requirement of 250ºC, a thermal jacket is used to protect the actuators.
All AWV tunnel fire dampers have successfully completed a 4 hour fire test to BS476, Part 20 and they have been tested for elevated temperature, thermal shock, pressure drop, leakage, blade deflection, 6,000,000 pressure reversals and regenerated noise.

Dätwyler Cables+Systems offers a new emergency lighting and labelling system for emergency exits. The system allows lighting facilities to keep running for 90 minutes in a fire incident, without short circuiting. It consists of Pyrosys BNL emergency lighting, combining fire emergency lights with emergency exit signs, and Pyrofil safety cables with DIN 4102-12 functional integrity. The cables are fixed via the fully tested and approved Pyrosys tunnel clamp TSD (E90), tested together with the safety cable according to the DIN 4102-12 standard. This is completed with the Pyrosys TAD distribution box featuring an integrated dispatch fuse designed as a joint box, which is installed between lighting and feed cables. The complete system meets the highest worldwide standards for road tunnel security.
High levels of safety are achieved via the distribution box’s integral dispatch fuse. In the event of fire only the light directly affected by the fire fails. The complete lighting system remains intact. This allows for a reduction in the required sub-distributors for SOS Telephones, resulting in cost savings of more than 50%. To ensure a higher degree of safety the remaining distributors should be protected by the sub-distributor UV 90 empty shell.

Fläkt Woods was created by bringing together two of the worlds leading players in the air management business, Fläkt and Woods Air Movement. Fläkt has a broad technology base covering ventilation systems, industrial air movement and cooling applications. Woods is a world leader for axial fan technology.
The company has recently won a large order to design and supply the ventilation for the extension to lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. A total of 42 large JM fans have been supplied, complete with attenuators and dampers, and also 24 jet fans. The powered ventilation system consists of reversible tunnel ventilation fans (TVF), installed in blast shafts adjacent to or between the stations, under platform/over track extract fans (UPE/OTE) installed in the stations, and jet fans installed in the tunnel.
The TVF’s are used to control smoke in case of a train fire in a tunnel or station. In normal operation the TVF’s will always extract from tunnel/station to ensure that fresh air is drawn into the system and to avoid supplying polluted air to the stations. The UPE fans are installed in the station and extract heat generated from train braking, traction and auxiliaries. They also draw in fresh air from the surface through the station and blast shafts to provide station ventilation. The UPE fans can also operate as over track smoke extract (OTE), by using the dampers to connect the fans to an alternative system of ductwork. These dampers are fire rated and low leakage.

This 35 year old British based company specialises exclusively in the manufacture of remote operation lighting measurement and automatic switching control for road tunnels. Its equipment is installed worldwide. The product range comprises light sensor units for measurement of luminance levels at tunnel entrance areas and illuminances within tunnel interiors.
The Model TS-101 Luminance Photometer, which continuously measures changes of daylight ‘brightness’ at road tunnel entrances within a viewing angle of 20º over a standard range of 0-6500cd/m2. When mounted externally at a tunnel’s approach road, the measurement angle approximates the view as seen by drivers of vehicle approaching the tunnel from a distance of 200m. The Model TS-150 Illuminance Photometer, which measures incident lighting levels within a tunnel interior over a standard range of 0-20,000lux.
Both sensors convert continuously the light measurements to a 4-20m/A output signal for feed to a host light switching controller. If required, these may be transmitted by radio instead of hard wire connection.
Each photometer conforms to CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage) recommended operational specification and calibrated to standards traceable to the British National Physical Laboratory. An individual calibration certificate is issued with each photometer.

The Visualume VLM luminaire is designed to provide outstanding sturdiness in tunnels, underpasses and other highly demanding lighting environments. It incorporates the Sealsafe sealed optical system which enhances and maintains its photometric performance over time.
TLC and TLS luminaires are made of two sections tightly closed by stainless steel spring-loaded latches, and sealed by a one-piece extruded silicone gasket. Optical systems for the TLC and TLS series consist of one-piece, anodised and brightened, hydroformed aluminium reflectors.
FV3 and FV4 luminaires are ideal for lighting tunnels and underpasses. They can be installed in a continuous line, end-to-end.
The MY1 luminaire consists of an extruded aluminium alloy body that is sealed onto a section of extruded polycarbonate.

Web: www.wittfan.de Smaller and shorter tunnels are often ventilated by longitudinal ventilation systems with jet fans. To reduce construction costs, the space above the lanes is kept small. Later this space is used to install installations such as cables, lighting and jet fans. However, the nearer the jet fans are installed to the ceiling or the walls, the less the thrust the fans generate. The reason for this reduction in thrust is the friction of the outlet air stream with the tunnel ceiling. Some jet fan makers have developed additional devices (outlet guide vanes), which direct the outlet air of the jet fan away from the ceiling towards the middle of the tunnel. These devices reduce the friction at the tunnel ceiling, but at the same time the sound power level of the jet fan is increased.
Witt & Sohn has developed a new kind of jet fan, which combines higher effective thrust without the higher noise level, the “Banana Jet”. With Banana Jet fans it is possible to generate 30% more thrust inside a tunnel compared with standard jet fans (using the same power consumption).
