Tunnel boring machinery makes up some 40% of the turnover at Wirth, the German manufacturer, known for its array of hard rock, large diameter drilling equipment for the high technology end of the foundation and petrochemical exploration industries.
Soft and mixed ground tunnelling expertise is represented by its subsidiary, Howden, in Scotland. But the incorporation of the Soltau soft ground microtunnelling manufacturing business from Lüneberg into Wirth’s factory at Erkelenz, Germany in late 1999 has considerably extended its alluvial ground tunnelling capability in the range 250mm to 3000mm diameter.
The "pre-owned" market in tunnelling machinery is booming more than new build, according to Wirth. Demonstrating this at Bauma on the company’s indoor stand 300 in the new Hall C3 will be the head of an 1880mm diameter Soltau RVS 800 slurry tunnelling machine.
This has been refurbished after driving 2.1km on several sites in Bilbao, Spain between October 1999 and December 2000. Drives of up to 400m were completed and curves of 1000m radius negotiated by the machine which is designed to cope with a mixture of cohesive clay soil with sand and gravel plus groundwater.
Reconditioned machines currently in the field include a 6.87m diameter hard rock tunneller recently delivered to Modern Continental of Boston, USA for a hydroelectric project. Delivered-new products will be represented at Bauma as scale models of two vast 12m diameter tunnelling machines which have been driving rail tunnels at Qingling northern China for the past four years.
Heavyweight directional drilling rigs in the medium to large range able of generating pullback forces from 30t to 250t are another speciality. On display at Wirth’s outdoor site, Block 604/8, will be the Power Bore 50-15 which has a 50t force pullback and 15ft mast. This machine is intended for drilling steered near-horizontal holes up to 800m long and reaming back at up to 800mm diameter. In a joint venture with UK firm ADDS Ltd of Bridgwater, Wirth has 10 large directional drilling rigs working worldwide.

Austrian tunnel machinery manufacturer Voest-Alpine Bergtechknik (Sandvik Construction & Mining group) will show its slurry tunnelling capability, which includes an MDS 445 shield now at work on Munich’s Mittlerer Ring Ost sewer tunnel. The 4.5m diameter machine is driving the main collector sewer through mixed sands and gravels with groundwater at depths of 4m to 8m below the city.
VAB is more familiar for its big roadheaders. Recently started open face rock tunnelling projects employing these include work for completion in Athens in time for the 2004 Olympic Games. Alpine Miner ATM 70 and AM 105 machines are at work in the 400m long Kollegious tunnel, which is being built as part of the Athens metro, cutting rock of up to 150Mpa strength. And quartz limestone of strengths up to 200MPa is being tackled by a VAB roadheader working in Valtellina Valley above Lake Como in northern Italy.

Among new products on Ingersoll-Rand’s stand will be two Drilling Solutions crawler drills for blasthole applications. The ECM-680 and ECM-660 produce holes from 102mm to 127mm and 76mm to 114mm in diameter, respectively. Both incorporate state of the art hydraulic drifters in which a trapezoidal piston delivers maximum impact energy to the rock, with the rebound energy recovery value changing blow energy to match rock hardness.
The same piston function is incorporated onto the Montabert 300 hammer for use on excavators from 6t to 16t. Spare energy remaining after striking the rock is saved and added to the next blow, increasing the productivity of the breaker.

Pioneer of pneumatic impact hammer microtunnelling, Tracto-Technik has a comprehensive range of equipment including several directional drilling rigs with ranges up to about 250m for pipes approaching 1m diameter.
The Lennestadt company’s crowded 500m² stand in Bauma’s open area at Block 1209/3 will include the new rubber tracked Grundodrill 10X which is described as "robust and compact". The machine is designed for installing a wide variety of pipe materials from HDPE to steel tubes with mortar sleeves in lengths of up to 250m and at diameters up to 355mm, depending on the soil conditions.
A major development in microtunnelling for utility installation, reports TT’s export manager Carola Schmidt, is the division between markets where highly skilled machine operators are the norm and those where relatively low paid unskilled labour is employed.
This division is not clear cut between developed and developing countries but depends on the source of construction labour in a region rather than a state’s apparent affluence.
Rigs with complex electronics and a high degree of automation are now supplied for the skilled labour markets, while bare but tough machines are built to survive the rough usage of unskilled operatives in other places.
A second characteristic of the smallest diameter range microtunnelling business is the boom being enjoyed at the moment on the back of the mobile phone revolution. Mobiles may be cable-less but the explosion in installation of ground stations has meant that there are massive networks of ground loops being installed so as to keep up with growth in phone usage.
Underground power cables are also in huge demand in France which is still suffering from the after effects of the 2000 New Year hurricane, especially in the south. Some villages are still relying on temporary generators and there is a major programme of underground mains cable installation underway to reconnect them to power stations.

Crushing and feeding in horizontal material flow is the feature of DBT’s stand. Due to economical, ecological and safety reasons, the company finds crusher-belt combinations are increasingly used for transportation of tunnel excavated materials. Even in tunnelling the DBT MinPro crusher technology has advantages, it says. The horizontal material flow in the crusher guarantees a high throughput and is constructed in a compact, low design – even with high mobile types, allowing the crusher to be moved straight to the heading face.
Presented at Bauma will be DBT MinPro’s impact roller crusher type SB 1010, the smallest of the tunnel crushers.
