The Japanese Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund is to lend Peru $475m. The loan is to be invested in the country’s infrastructure following the El Nino disaster of 1998. The sectors to benefit are: roads; irrigation; water and sewage; health; and electricity. Piura and Chimbote will have $116m invested in improvements to water treatment facilities and reservoirs and pipeline networks. $132m will be spent on road improvements to connect the mountain regions with coastal areas.
