Japanese contractor Hazama is using new leak prevention technology on the construction of the northern section of Vietnam’s US$251M Hai Van road tunnel. The contractor, which is in joint venture with Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No 6 (Cienco 6), estimated it could save more than US$530,000 on the project. But there is no incentive to use these cost-saving techniques under the existing contract conditions. The 6.3km long Hai Van tunnel is being built in two sections with Hazama-Cienco 6 responsible for the northern portion, while South Korea’s Dong Ah is in joint venture with local firm, Song Da Corporation, building the southern drive.
