The WG Tunnel Arch T200 (WGTA) is a new drainage system from Giertsen Tunnel for waterproofing road tunnels with high volumes of high-speed traffic. The system is a fire retardant lining system for water leakage, humidity protection and frost insulation of road tunnels.

It consists of steel pipe arches spaced at 1.5m combined with the WG tunnel sealing fabric. All joints of the fabric are hot air welded to produce a waterproof surface, says Giertsen Tunnel. After the steel pipes have been installed, the fabric reinforcement is fitted and covered with a minimum 80mm thickness of shotcrete.

The all-steel arch construction comprises hot dipped galvanised pipes bent to the tunnel radius. The company adds: “Each arch section consists of a simple back-pipe and a double front pipe-band, which press the sealing fabric in a strong, but safe, way. Each section is 2.5m long and is bolted directly to the rock. In sub-sea tunnels etc., an epoxy coating gives added corrosion protection.”

The new WGTA system is said to be approved by the Norwegian Road Department for use in all kinds of road tunnels.

The first installation of WGTA was in the Troldhaugtunnel in Bergen, Norway for Skanska Norway.
