Netherlands-based architecture company MVRDV has been awarded a contract by the City of Irvine to design the proposed Cultural Terrace project in California, US.
Located adjacent to Irvine’s Great Park on a 110-acre parcel of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the Cultural Terrace project aims to transform a former military airfield into a major cultural complex.

MVRDV will form part of IBI Group-led design team, which also includes landscape architecture company Agency Artifact and local architects MAAM.
Consulting firms Buro Happold, Langan Engineering, and Ryder Levitt Bucknell will also support the development of Cultural Terrace project.
The project will see the adaptive re-use of a 40,000ft2 warehouse and two 140,000ft2 hangars and, and revisioning of the surrounding landscape.
Upon completion, the project will comprise a museum complex, library, event space, community centre, and City offices.

By GlobalDataFurthermore, multi-purpose outdoor spaces are planned to be built are as part of the project to connect the buildings while offering new public space.
MVRDV partner Fokke Moerel said: “We are very excited to work on one of the most important cultural projects in Southern California, especially on a project that adapts existing structures and sites, rather than building anew.
“The Cultural Terrace will demonstrate how a sustainable reuse approach can create one-of-a-kind cultural experiences.”
MVRDV said that the team’s top priority is the development of a carbon-neutral campus, which would contribute to the City’s Addressing Climate Change in Irvine’s Environment, Values, and Energy Sources (ACHIEVES) resolution under the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.
MAAM official Mariam Mojdehi said: “We see opportunities for the Cultural Terrace to be a teaching tool, making as much of the sustainability infrastructure, energy usage, and monitoring as visible and participatory as possible.”
