US-based energy infrastructure holding company SJI and development partner REV LNG have broken ground on renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities at four dairy farms in Michigan.
The move marks the first series of renewable energy projects by the partners to start construction outside of the Northeast region.
The projects include 2M gallon anaerobic digesters and related RNG facilities construction which will be designed to capture methane produced by cow manure at the four farms.
Planned to be commissioned by late 2022, the farms include Double Eagle, Roto-Z, Goma and Z-Star.
SJI said that the four projects will feature equipment to clean the digester-produced biogas which will transform it into commercial-grade pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.
REV LNG, which led early-stage development for SJI, will be responsible for the construction of the RNG facilities.

By GlobalDataREV LNG CEO David Kailbourne said: “REV LNG is committed to implementing creative energy solutions that help our company and the clients we serve to reduce our carbon footprints.”
Together, the four sustainable farms are expected to help produce nearly 3M therms of RNG annually.
SJI president and CEO Mike Renna said: “SJI recognizes that in order to achieve our goal of 100% carbon reduction by 2040, working collaboratively with organizations that share our same mission is critical.
“With that, SJI is proud to partner with REV LNG and dairy farms across the nation on these innovative clean energy projects that I am confident will result in positive environmental outcomes for the regions we serve and beyond.”
Recently, SJI and REV LNG started construction on an RNG facility at Oakridge Dairy, which is said to be Connecticut’s largest dairy farm.
