Construction company BAM has been selected by Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust to build a new mental health facility in Highgate, North London.
BAM will construct the new building opposite to the Trust’s existing Highgate Mental Health Centre. Construction on the project is due to begin later this year after planning permission has been received.
The new facility will have five wards, a gym, dedicated activity spaces and a community café and will replace the ageing mental health inpatient wards at St Pancras Hospital.
Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust CEO Angela McNab said: “This appointment marks another exciting milestone in our plans to deliver a brand new inpatient mental health facility for people in Camden and Islington.”
In the last one year, the Trust claims to have worked closely with service users, carers, staff and architects to co-design the new facility.
The Trust had taken their ideas, suggestions and experience of using existing inpatient services. The feedback is claimed to have helped in shaping the design of the new building.

By GlobalDataThe Trust’s St Pancras transformation programme director Malcolm McFrederick said: “Our aim is to develop a modern, therapeutic facility that supports wellbeing, recovery and enables staff to provide the best possible care. We are delighted that a contractor has now been appointed to turn year-long co-production discussions, into a reality.”
BAM Construction Director Gavin Pantlin said: “Our experience combined with a highly modern and sophisticated approach is what the healthcare sector demands because of the range of sensitive environments patients and medical professionals experience.
“Our main concern is working closely with the Trust, understanding their needs clearly and thoroughly, and seeking ways to use the opportunity that building these new facilities brings to benefit others.”
Recently, BAM was appointed by CEG for the construction of the ₤350m development at Globe Road, Leeds.
Globe Point will comprise a total of 37,810ft² over seven floors and will include office space with ground floor break out space, retail and leisure. The new building is expected to be completed in 2021.
