
The Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) has unanimously approved the redevelopment of the Bond Bread Factory / WRECO Garage project at Howard University in Washington, DC, US.
A master development team comprising Fivesquares Development, The Menkiti Group, and EDENS will lead the redevelopment project.
The HPRB approval will allow the Bond Bread project to move forward with design and permitting.
Designed by Studios Architecture, the project comprises a 180-room lifestyle hotel, 469 residential units, and 50,100ft² of retail space.
The nine-storey project will also include a 19,800ft² open public courtyard with the historical truss reveal of the previous WRECO bus garage.
The project development team will create a vital neighbourhood centre and aims to highlight the connection to Howard University.

The company stated that the design of the redevelopment project encourages and invites the local community to gather in a courtyard that is covered with historical expressions of poetry, art, and neighbourhood literature.
Howard University president Wayne Frederick said: “Receiving this approval represents a critical next step in enhancing Howard University’s strategic efforts to energize and revitalize the community surrounding our campus.
“The Bond Bread Partnership has enabled us to move forward with this development that will enhance the Shaw and Pleasant Plains neighbourhood and create value for DC residents and businesses while respecting the historic structures on this site.”
