The project will mark the development of Bangladesh’s first underground metro line.
Under CP09, L&T and Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation will design, procure, install, test and commission the track and electrical systems.
The scope includes power supply and distribution, traction substations, overhead catenary and associated electrical facilities.
L&T will separately deliver the signalling, telecommunications and platform screen door systems across the Line 1 network under CP10.
The packages cover the operational systems for a planned 31km metro project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Line 1 will comprise an Airport Route between Kamalapur and the airport, and the Purbachal Route linking Natun Bazar with Purbachal Terminal. The project is planned to include 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj.
L&T has not disclosed the exact contract value, but the combined contract packages were classified as a “major” order, which according to its standardised reporting framework falls in the range of Rs50bn to Rs100bn ($525m to $1.05bn).
The company previously delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, Bangladesh’s first metro rail corridor now in commercial operation.
In addition, L&T is currently executing an electrical and mechanical systems package for the Jakarta Metro, according to the announcement.
L&T Transportation Infrastructure senior vice-president and head Ramkumar S said: “The repeat orders from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) are a testament to L&T’s capabilities in delivering large scale, integrated urban transit projects globally.
“With a strong track record of delivering E&M systems for the Dhaka Metro Line 6 with the highest standards of quality and timely execution, and more recently, for the Jakarta Metro, which is under execution, we are well positioned to leverage our experience in seamlessly integrating multiple systems in close coordination with OEMs and stakeholders.”
